The third in the Hindu Trinity of Brahma and Vishnu, Shiva is also known by various names like Mahadev, Mahakaal, Tryambakeshwar, Bholenath etc., During the churning of the ocean, Lord Vishnu as the Kurma (Turtle) spat out a deadly poison, which would have destroyed the whole world.
In order to save the world Lord Shiva drank this poison and kept in his throat, which turned blue and gave him the name Neelkanth (Neel-Blue, Kanth-Throat).
